Raw Lumber
Raw lumber is the material thats created after we process a log and stack it to dry. Another term for Raw lumber is rough sawn lumber and is the first step to getting the material you need for your project. We have a massive selection of species and sizes of lumber including: White Oak, Maple, Walnut, ash Pine.
What does nominal lumber mean?
If you have been shopping lumber you may have heard the term Nominal Lumber and are curious what the difference is. Nominal Lumber refers to a piece of material that has had some level of processing and can be used as is in a finished project such as framing a house. Nominal number can be confusing since asking for a 2” x 4” board would get you a 1.5” x 3.5” board. The reason for this is simply due to the processing of the material and that smaller board started its life as a 2” x 4” piece that had to be processed down to create the more finished piece.
How do I know what size I need?
When you talk with us we will always do our best to communicate clearly but keep this idea is mind regardless. If you need to be able to process your lumber and end at an inch you will need extra material on the lumber, with Raw lumber that would mean purchasing a 1.25” board to finish it at 1”. If you are still confused do not worry we are available to answer any questions you might have and are ready to help you with all your lumber needs!
Our Process
1. Sawing
Our cutting is done on location at our mill, custom orders are cut to order and the logs are selected specifically to get the best yield for the requested dimensions and quantity. Our lead times vary depending on the season as it's harder to cut in the winter so our busy season is the summer. If you need your material in a timely manner be sure to contact us ASAP so we can get you on the schedule and figure out when we will be able to get you your material.
2. Stacking
All Lumber is stacked per the order, We typically stack our wood using a method called “stickering”. Stickering is the process of adding a 1” x 1” stick between each layer of wood to allow for adequate air flow as the drying process begins. We can also stack your material to order without Stickering if you have your own process for the material or if you will be using the wood while it's still green.
3. Drying
Drying is the process of “seasoning” material prior to it being used. Wood is a live material and holds excess moisture that is released slowly over time. If your material will require drying then some form of stickering is required to get a properly seasoned material. A good rule of thumb for drying is to give the material at least 1 year per inch thick prior to working with it. If you need to have your material ready to work with sooner you can have us Kiln dry it for you which takes about 6 months on average.
